Boxing Results Roundup: Sergio Survives Chavez Jr, Canelo Destroys Lopez, Maidana in War, Ponce De Leon Wins, More

In case you missed anything from what was an exciting, eventful, and pretty damn great Saturday in the world of boxing, let's put it all together here so you can catch up.

Las Vegas, NV (Thomas & Mack Center - HBO PPV)

Sergio Martinez UD-12 Julio Cesar Chavez Jr

Martinez survived a big 12th round push from Chavez Jr, but otherwise dominated the fight, and led 11-0 on two official scorecards (and ours) and 10-1 on the third official scorecard heading into that round. For 11 rounds, Martinez outclassed his younger, far bigger rival, but a big right hand stunned Martinez and a few left hooks put him on the canvas moments later, bringing an incredible reaction from the sold-out, mostly pro-Chavez crowd. The fight was not a a classic -- but the 12th round sure was, as Sergio refused to hold and fought his way through over a minute of pure survival as Chavez Jr threw everything he had at him.

There is already talk of a rematch next year, potentially at Cowboys Stadium, but right now, there is some real concern over a knee injury suffered by Martinez, too.

Rocky Martinez SD-12 Miguel Beltran Jr

In the true Fight of the Night on the Top Rank/HBO PPV side, Puerto Rico's Martinez scored a narrow win over Mexico's Beltran in an all-out, 12-round war that saw Beltran start fast, and Martinez heat up to meet him on even ground. These two traded heavy leather, and in the end, it was unfortunately a Russell Mora point deduction that made the difference, as Martinez won on two cards, 114-113, with Beltran taking the third, 116-111. Without the deduction -- which wasn't really undeserved or totally unfair, but regrettable, I guess you would say -- we'd have had a majority draw. The decision itself was pretty fair, and if you missed this show, this is a fight to track down. Great stuff. Martinez now holds the WBO super featherweight title.

Matthew Macklin TKO-1 Joachim Alcine
Some expected this to at least be competitive, though I was not one of them. I didn't really expect Macklin to trounce Alcine in 2:36, but I also wasn't shocked by it. It wasn't that long ago that Alfredo Angulo did the same to Alcine on HBO. Alcine is still a competent fighter on a certain level, but Macklin was all business tonight -- in other words, he wasn't in Vegas to fuck around, and he pounced on Alcine quickly, and just ran him right over. Alcine was down twice, and though he played surprised by the stoppage, it was barely arguable. Macklin was bombarding him and was ready to finish it. Macklin fought like a guy who meant to tell the audience, "Look, this is what I can do. Don't forget me just because Sergio beat me."

Guillermo Rigondeaux UD-12 Robert Marroquin

Marroquin, 23, gave it a decent go, but he just couldn't figure out the savvy Cuban for any real stretch of time. He did buzz him twice in the fight, but that didn't make up for two knockdowns suffered at the hands of the defending WBA super bantamweight champion. Rigondeaux kind of cruised through this fight -- he has a level of ability that allows him to do that better than just about anyone in the sport, and frankly, he's not being matched with world class fighters. It's a question of whether or not they want to fight him, too. Nonito Donaire has honestly sounded like he wants nothing to do with Rigondeaux, making a big deal out of not wanting to fight a guy who isn't worth much money. This coming from the guy who fought Jeffrey Mathebula in his last fight. Honestly, the more I watch Rigondeaux, I agree with the minority that thinks Donaire-Rigondeaux might be an awful fight full of guys twitching and waiting.

Willie Nelson UD-10 John Jackson, Michael Medina UD-8 James Winchester, Wale Omotoso UD-8 Daniel Sostre

Nelson vs Jackson was actually a very good fight, and would have been high-end ShoBox stuff. I saw one notable boxing writer describe it as an upset, but was it? Nelson had been in with better competition, and despite being the son of Julian Jackson, John Jackson's 13-0 mark was super empty and I don't recall hearing a ton about his prospect status. Jackson just got outworked and outlasted in the end, but he's got raw tools and some upside. Nelson, the 6'3" junior middleweight, remains interesting, and fun to watch. Medina and Omotos had no trouble at all in their fights.

Las Vegas, NV (MGM Grand - Showtime)

Canelo Alvarez TKO-5 Josesito Lopez

This wound up a pretty gross mismatch, and Lopez said after the fight that the size was definitely a factor, but he didn't try to make an excuse out of it. "I knew he was a tough fighter and he proved he's a better fighter," Lopez said. "He was smarter, stronger and patient. I felt good going in but there was a big size difference. I was hoping to land a good punch to change the momentum." Lopez, gritty and brave, was floored three times before referee Joe Cortez mercy-stopped it in the fifth round. Lopez actually had a decent game plan, wasn't fighting poorly, and landed some shots. But the physical strength difference between them was really obvious. I'm not saying Golden Boy should hang their heads here -- maybe you feel that way, but I've seen far worse than this, though this wound up pretty bad -- but they've got to be serious about Canelo's next opponent. It absolutely has to be a legit junior middleweight.

On that angle, Canelo says he's ready for Miguel Cotto or Floyd Mayweather.

Daniel Ponce De Leon TD-8 Jhonny Gonzalez

The night's most disappointing fight, with nowhere near the fireworks we expected. But it wasn't a bad fight. The two had a lot of respect for one another. This was the darkhorse option: A fight where two guys knew they were matched extremely tough, and were worried about how vulnerable they were to the other man's strengths. Gonzalez knew his weak chin was a bad fit for Ponce De Leon's thunder, and Ponce De Leon knew his lack of speed could be badly exploited by Gonzalez. The fight was called early when a head clash led to a nasty cut over Gonzalez's eye, and Ponce De Leon got the cards in the shortened fight. Maybe they should do it again. Ponce De Leon now has the WBC featherweight title.

Marcos Maidana TKO-8 Jesus Soto Karass

THESE TWO TRIED TO TAKE EACH OTHER APART. MAIDANA GOT THE WIN. WATCH THIS FIGHT. IT WAS A FIGHT OF THE YEAR CONTENDER.
Leo Santa Cruz RTD-5 Eric Morel

Well, Morel came to fight, and he came to win. And Santa Cruz, the highly-talented, highly-entertaining young WBC bantamweight champ, beat the crap out of him and forced him to give up the fight after five rounds.

Bamberg, Germany

Yoan Pablo Hernandez UD-12 Troy Ross

Ross won this fight, but you'd never know it. The usual, "Well, swing rounds" banter is already out. I didn't think there were all that many swing rounds, personally. There was also another Edmund Gerber load of BS on the undercard.

Tom Craze returns to BLH this afternoon with his weekly look at the boxing game from a bettor's perspective. This week, of course, he's focused on Chavez Jr vs Martinez, as well as Canelo vs Lopez and the undercard action on both shows.

On Saturday night, the WBC middleweight titlist will step into the ring weighing around 30lbs more than his counterpart. He'll be around a decade younger than the guy in the other corner, with what's expected to be the majority of a sell-out Vegas crowd cheering him on. With 48 fights to his name, he's still unbeaten and will be taking home the bulk of a sizeable main-event purse. So, why the hell is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr a betting underdog?

Watch Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs Josesito Lopez Live Streaming Online : 3 Thoughts on the Match: Fan Preview

The headline fight of Showtime's Knockout Kings card on September 15 in Las Vegas sees Saul "Canelo" Alvarez look to defend his WBC title against Josesito Lopez. Canelo is one of the rising stars in the sport, while Lopez has asserted himself as one of boxing's upset specialists. Here are 3 quick thoughts on the Canelo vs. Lopez fight and what fans can expect to see.

The Weight

Before stepping in to face Victor Ortiz this June as a replacement opponent, Lopez was campaigning as a junior welterweight, at 140 pounds. As recently as November 2007, he fought in the lightweight division. Meanwhile, Canelo is a thickly muscled junior middleweight, and his future is likely limited at 154 pounds, because the 22-year-old kid is still growing into his body.

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will defend his WBC light middleweight title on Saturday night against Josesito Lopez. It's the fifth championship defense for Alvarez. The last came when he defeated Shane Mosley in May by unanimous decision.

The undefeated rising star enters the fight as a heavy favorite. Prior to upsetting Victor Ortiz, Lopez lost to Jessie Vargas, which would suggest he's not prepared to knock off an elite fighter like Alvarez unless he significantly elevates his game.

It's an important bout for Alvarez because he's finally starting to receive the recognition he deserves for his terrific run. He doesn't want to suffer a setback now. The 22-year-old Mexican star has won 29 of his 41 fights by knockout.

Let's take a look at all the key information for Saturday's clash, followed by keys to victory for each boxer and a prediction for who will walk away with the light middleweight title.

Where: MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
When: Saturday, Sept. 15 at 9 p.m. ET
Watch: Showtime
Live Stream: Showtime Anytime

Alvarez's Keys to Victory

The most important thing for Alvarez is using his power effectively. It's one area where he holds a sizable advantage over Lopez. He should be able to wear him down with combinations in the early rounds, leaving him vulnerable for a knockout later on.

After establishing an early edge with his power, Alvarez has to make sure the fight remains at his pace. He doesn't want to fall into the same trap Ortiz did and allow Lopez to find a comfort zone with a more up-tempo approach.

Sergio Martinez vs Julio Cesar Chavez JR. SHOCKING FIGHT UPDATE – Breaking Boxing News online

This week’s Mexican Independence Day weekend World Middleweight Championship event between undefeated WBC middleweight champion and Son of the Legend, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KOs) and two-division world champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KOs), of Quilmes, Buenos Aires, Argentina, sold its last remaining tickets today at 1:58 p.m. PT. Chavez Jr. vs. Martinez will become the highest-attended boxing event in the history of the Thomas & Mack Center with 19,186 seats, eclipsing the Lennox Lewis vs. Evander Holyfield heavyweight championship rematch, which previously held the record with 19,151.

“Viva Chavez and Martinez,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “The last two tickets were purchased just before 2 p.m. PT and our sellout has produced a paid gate of over $3 million. How appropriate that on the eve of the 20th anniversary of Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Hector Camacho, the Thomas & Mack’s fourth highest-attended event [17,972], which took place on September 12, 1992, that Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. surpass his father’s record in an epic fight of his own. Father and son will be forever linked as two of the highest-attended paid boxing events in the building’s history. Naturally, the live pay-per-view telecast will be available to all cable and satellite TV systems in the Las Vegas area.”

“This is a celebration about everything that is great about boxing,” said promoter Lou DiBella. “This is obviously a fight that everyone wanted to see and thanks to Sergio and Julio everyone will have the opportunity to see — live on pay-per-view. I strongly recommend that boxing fans in the Las Vegas area buy their tickets to the closed circuit screenings at Wynn Las Vegas now before they sell out too.”

The cruiserweight division is often overlooked and is usually seen a bridge between light heavyweights and heavyweights, but on this day the spotlight turns to this IBF cruiserweight title fight.  Troy Ross (25-2) challenges the champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (26-1) in this showdown which will tip off a very eventfully and exciting Saturday boxing card.

The veteran Troy Ross, formerly the winner of the 2009 “The Contender”, gets another shot at the IBF cruiserweight title after he suffered a cut in his 5th round TKO loss against Steve Cunningham for the vacant title back in 2012.  The 37 year old appeared to be in command of the fight and even had Cunningham down in the 4th round but the tables turned in the next round. A bad cut opened over the eye of Ross and the ref determined he would not allow the fight to go on despite multiple protests from Ross.  It appeared to be a questionable stoppage but that’s how boxing goes some times.  Since the loss to Cunningham, Ross has won against solid cruiserweight fighters in Carl Handy and Lukasz Rusiewicz.  It appears this will probably be the last title shot for Ross and he is hoping to make the most of it.

Yoan Pablo Hernandez to Face Troy Ross on September 15
saturday 15th Sept: 7.30pm UK, 8.30pm CET, 2.30pm EST

IBF cruiserweight titlist Yoan Pablo Hernandez will make his mandatory title defense against Troy Ross on September 15 at Stechert Arena in Bamberg, Germany, Sauerland Event has announced.

Hernandez (26-1, 13 KO) engaged in a pair of memorable fights against Steve Cunningham in his last two outings, controversially winning a technical decision in October 2011, then following that with a 12-round decision win in a grueling fight on February 4 of this year. The 27-year-old Cuban has a style that invites action, and was able to put Cunningham on the canvas in both of their bouts.

Chavez Jr vs Martinez: Sergio's Team Talking Fights with Mayweather, Pacquiao, Ward For the Future

Sergio Martinez adviser Sampson Lewkowicz says that his fighter has three major fights in mind for the future -- if the weights are right. Sure, Sergio has a pretty important and big fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on Saturday night,

Sergio would fight, according to Lewkowicz:

Manny Pacquiao at 152 pounds
Floyd Mayweather at 154 pounds
Andre Ward at 160 pounds

Pacquiao has said he doesn't want to fight over 147 and the highest limit he's ever been in the ring with was 150, which he did recently offer to Miguel Cotto, and that was turned down.

Chavez Jr vs Martinez: Fight Is Sold Out at Thomas & Mack Center

Saturday night's HBO pay-per-view showdown between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Sergio Martinez is officially sold out, according to a Top Rank press release, with the final tickets going this afternoon.

This is incredibly impressive not just because of the fact that so few boxing fights in the States sell this many tickets or sell out at all, but because there is a competing fight just across town in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand, with Canelo Alvarez facing Josesito Lopez in the main event.

Guillermo Rigondeaux is back on Saturday night's Chavez Jr vs Martinez undercard, still facing Roberto Marroquin, with Rigondeaux's WBA super bantamweight title at stake.

Rigondeaux (10-0, 8 KO) was signed up for the main undercard bout a while back, but briefly was removed from the card due to manager Gary Hyde winning a ruling in Miami that prevented the fight from going forward. But Hyde and Top Rank reached an agreement yesterday, and though another party (Caribe Promotions) has also tried to stop the fight because they've got some kind of contract with Rigondeaux despite never doing anything for him, allegedly, it appears as though this is fully moving forward and going to happen.
